Success in Creating High-Temperature Superconductivity in Lightweight Al-Ti-Mg Alloy
A research collaboration led by Kyushu University and Kyushu Institute of Technology has discovered a new superconducting state in an aluminum–titanium–magnesium (Al-Ti-Mg) alloy with a superconducting transition temperature higher than previously observed in this system. Using machine learning to guide the compositional search and a high-pressure torsion process to synthesize the alloy, the team identified compositions that exhibit superconductivity above 7 K, significantly exceeding the ~1.7 K transition temperatures known in similar alloys. This approach—combining data-driven prediction and advanced deformation processing—establishes a novel experimental design strategy that accelerates the discovery of functional materials. The finding opens up possibilities for lightweight, easily manufacturable, and cost-effective superconducting materials.
